Made-to-Order vs Ready-to-Wear: Why Petite Feet Deserve Better

Handcrafted petite heels — made-to-order vs ready-to-wear shoes for small feet

And why exceptional shoes for small feet are worth every penny.

There is a quiet frustration shared by millions of women with petite feet. It plays out in changing rooms, at the end of long shopping trips, and in the resigned acceptance of shoes that almost fit — shoes that were never truly made with them in mind.

At PiccolaShoes, we built our entire world around solving that problem. But as our customers know, crafting beautiful footwear for smaller feet is not simply a matter of scaling down a standard last. It is an art form — and one that comes with its own set of complexities, costs, and uncompromising standards.

Ready-to-Wear and Made-to-Order: Two Paths, One Standard

We offer both ready-to-wear styles and made-to-order options — and the question we hear most often is: what's the difference?

The honest answer is less than you might think. Every shoe that leaves our atelier, whether it was waiting for you on the shelf or crafted specifically to your specifications, is made by hand. The same skilled artisans. The same carefully sourced materials. The same exacting attention to proportion, comfort, and finish that petite footwear demands.

Ready-to-wear simply means the style, colour, and size are ready to ship. Made-to-order means you have the freedom to personalise — the heel height, the leather, the lining, the details that make a shoe unmistakably yours. But the craftsmanship behind both is identical.

Why Petite Shoes Cost More — And Why That's Entirely Justified

This is perhaps the question we are asked most frequently, and it deserves a candid answer.

Materials are harder to source. The leathers, suedes, and specialist fabrics used in petite footwear must be cut with precision from smaller pattern pieces. Sourcing high-quality hides and textiles in the quantities a small-batch atelier requires means we cannot benefit from the economies of scale that mass-market brands rely upon. We buy less, so we pay more — and we refuse to compromise on quality to offset that.

Small-batch production is inherently more expensive. Mass-produced shoes are made in their thousands, with costs distributed across enormous runs. Our shoes are not. Each pair is handled individually, shaped by hand, and finished with care. That process takes time, skill, and investment — none of which can be rushed without sacrificing the result.

Petite lasts are a specialism. Designing and maintaining the lasts — the foot-shaped moulds around which shoes are built — for smaller sizes requires dedicated expertise. A size 1 is not simply a smaller size 6. The proportions of the heel, the toe box, the arch — all must be recalibrated entirely. This is skilled, specialist work.

And yet, the market is small. Petite footwear has historically been underserved precisely because the commercial incentive to serve it well has been limited. The women who wear smaller sizes have long been an afterthought. We chose to make them our entire focus — which means absorbing costs that larger brands simply don't encounter.

What You Are Actually Paying For

When you invest in a pair of PiccolaShoes, you are not paying a premium for a label. You are paying for:

  • Handcrafted construction — every pair made with the same care, whether ready-to-wear or bespoke
  • Premium materials — sourced for quality, not convenience
  • Proportional design — built specifically for petite feet, not adapted from a larger template
  • Longevity — shoes made this way last, and age beautifully
  • Exclusivity — you will not pass yourself on the street

The Case for Investing in Your Shoes

There is an old adage in fashion: buy less, buy better. Nowhere is this truer than footwear. A well-made shoe, properly cared for, will outlast a wardrobe of fast-fashion alternatives — and it will do so while looking and feeling infinitely superior.

For women with petite feet, the calculus is even clearer. The options have always been limited. The choice has too often been between ill-fitting shoes at a lower price, or nothing at all. We exist to offer a third path: footwear that was made for you, that fits as it should, and that reflects the standard you deserve.
